I just got back from visiting my daughter in Tanzania. She is over there for a year teaching English in a remote Massai village with the Orkeeswa School. She started a running club after school. The club participated in the Half Marathon and 5K at the Kilimanjaro Marathon in February. On June 9, they held the first ever Cross Country Invitational at their school!

It was a 6K course with the toughest hills I have ever run on a race course. Four other schools sent runners (of course there were no race fees! We donated shirts for the top 10 male and female runners and the winning school for male and female won watches! The village elders also came to help make the awards. Orkeeswa also had lunch and drinks for everyone after the race. You can see more photos on my Facebook page.
The pictures above capture the reason we all love running and racing – no matter where you are from. It captures the hard work, camaraderie, and joy in a very pure form.
