2024 Top 100 Largest Races

We assembled a preliminary list of the 2024 top 100 largest races that were timed. We have been accumulating this list for a couple of years (see 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2023).

A few notes:

  • This data is total finishers based on public results data for all events for each race weekend (eg. total of 5K, 10K, Half and Full).
  • This data does not include untimed events. Many large P2P events and untimed Turkey Trots are not included.
  • There is no single aggregator of timing data, and while we try to be thorough, we may have missed some races or found incomplete data. If you see missing or incorrect data, please let us know at eric@runsignup.com. The last updates were made on 1/8/2025 at 9:55am.

2024 Top 100 Largest Races List

Large races have had a much slower recovery from the pandemic than smaller races. While there may still be a slight lag, the 2024 numbers show that most large events are approaching their pre-COVID size.

  • Just 16 races in the top 100 had fewer participants in 2024 than in 2023. On average races grew 11.1% compared to last year.
  • 36 of the top 100 2024 races exceeded their 2019 participation. On average, races were 1.3% smaller in 2024 than 2019.
  • In 2024, the top 100 list had 1,822,490 participants, just slightly behind the 1,874,586 from the 2019 list.
  • In 2019, the 100th largest race had 9,456 participants. In 2023 it was just 7,233. In 2024, the 100th largest race had 8,474.
  • In 2019, 33 races exceeded 20,000 participants. In 2023, 26 races exceeded 20,000 participants. In 2024, 32 races exceeded 20,000 participants.

On average, races grew from 2023-2024, but still lagged very slightly behind their 2019 registration levels. However, growth (or decline) was not even amongst all races.

  • From 2023 to 2024, the races that grew the most were the Twin Cities Marathon and Marine Corps Marathon, both of which were impacted by adverse weather in 2023 (early course closure for Marine Corps Marathon and a full cancellation of the largest event for Twin Cities). Outside of those two, NYCRUNS Brooklyn Half Marathon had the most growth, with an 85% increase in the last year.
  • From 2019 to 2024, the race that has grown the most is the Seattle Cherry Blossom Run, with a whopping 736% increase. NYCRUNS Brooklyn Half Marathon also shows up here, with 275% growth since 2019.

Registration Platforms and the Top 100

Two thirds of all the races in the top 100 use one of four major registration platform.

  • RunSignup leads with the most races in the top 100 list. This is in line with RunSignup’s overall endurance market share of ~50%, with more than 10 million participants in 30,000 races in 2024.
  • Race Roster has made some aggressive pricing & merchandise based pitches for races in recent years, although they have struggled at times to handle large volumes of registrations.
  • Haku focuses on larger races with a strategy that includes building custom solutions and providing on-site personnel. This is a less scalable, higher cost model that some large races believe they need.
  • Active retains a foothold in the large race industry through their Rock ‘n’ Roll series, despite discontinuing a number of races in the past few years.
  • 15 races used some type of custom, in-house software.
  • It remains to be seen what will happen with the 7 races on Enmotive, which announced it was shutting down earlier this year.
  • 9 additional registration companies worked with 1-2 races on the top 100 list.

As Bob discussed in his blog on Company Strategy for 2024, RunSignup’s focus is on remaining the clear technology leader for races and timers. We hold ourselves accountable to our customers with a “No Contracts” philosophy that ensures customers can always choose the technology that’s best for their event.

What’s Changed Since 2023

There are 13 new races in the top 100. These include:

  • One race that was cancelled for weather in 2023
  • Two new races
  • One race that returned for the first time since 2017
  • 9 races that fell slightly outside the top 100 in 2023 and grew substantially in 2024

New Races to The Top 100 List (Compared to 2022)

There were 13 races that dropped out of the top 100. Of those, 8 had declining participation in 2024. However, 5 actually grew but still came up short of the top 100 due to faster growth for other events.

The encouraging thing? None of the races that dropped off the top 100 were simply discontinued races. In contrast, there was one race from 2022 that was discontinued in 2023, and six of the top 100 races from 2019 had been discontinued

Summary

Most races are small. In our upcoming 2025 Trends Report, we found:

  • 87% of all race weekends have fewer than 500 participants
  • The majority of participants (56%) take part in a race with fewer than 1,000 registrants.
  • The 1,819,351 total participants is only a small portion of total race participants. For example RunSignup’s total 10,808,867 registrations is around 6x the whole Top 100.

Regardless, large events have an outsized impact on the perception of the running industry and a lot of sway on how the industry is perceived. On average, the Top 100 races still lag slightly behind their 2019 registration levels, but the difference is less than 2%. We’re excited to see the top of the market approaching full recovery.

Looking ahead, races need to ensure a race day experience that will make runners want to return (and others want to join). And, they need marketing programs, both grassroots and digital, to share how fun that race day can be. Meet and run with local training groups, and running clubs, and focus on beginner outreach. Then, experiment with new forms of social media, personalize your email, and distribute photographic and video media from your events. We will continue to support your events through free and easy technology, with many upgrades to come in 2025!
