We’re proud to announce the inaugural Alan Jones Timer Award winner, Marc Roy, with Sportstats in Ottawa, Canada.
Bob Bickel, Founder and CEO of RunSignup, presented Marc with his award at RunSignup’s Symposium on July 16 in Philadelphia. The award plaque includes an authentic mounted Jones Counter (that spins!).
Earlier this year, we introduced the Alan Jones Timer Award as a way to recognize race timers who have had a significant impact on the industry. As the backbone of the race industry, timers have the opportunity to guide race organizers toward innovation and to truly change and elevate the experience for participants and spectators.
The Alan Jones Timer Award is named in honor of Alan Jones, who is a recognized innovator and is most known for his creation of the Jones Counter, age-based grading, and RunScore.
With 27 years in the race industry, this year’s winner, Marc Roy, is a highly regard presence in the industry. His history of successful entrepreneurship, includes leading the growth of now one of the largest timing organizations in the world. Marc’s innovative leadership has led to the unprecedented mass scalability of timing events across geographic international regions.
Marc acquired Sportstats in 1995 and has grown the company from timing 42 events to 1,300 events that take place in more than 40 countries around the world. Marc’s career also includes the creation and eventually selling of a prosperous registration company now known as Events.com. He further demonstrates his extensive involvement in the race industry as the Co-Race Director for the Ironman Mont-Tremblant and Ironman 70.3 since 2012.
Selection of the award was based on nominations received by industry peers and demonstrated innovation. We received many strong candidates of timers who are doing impressive things in the industry. Marc was an easy decision for us and we know most will agree that he’s an obvious choice. He has broken industry barriers by expanding his customer base across the globe, demonstrating a deliberate, methodical and innovative approach by someone who has the passion to explore new territory and break down previous barriers. His efforts and self-sacrifice make the difference.
