Using AI for Your Race Website

With the release of Websites V2 races have an opportunity to refresh the style and structure of their race websites, and some Canva Templates to help. The text from your old website can be simply copied and pasted into your new Website V2. However, the transition provides a good opportunity to refresh your written website copy as well.

While we don’t really recommend AI writing your whole website (you do need to ensure accurate race details), it can be a big help to bring some new flavor to old text. We tested out two of the most popular free AI tools, Google Gemini and ChatGPT. Take a look at how they handled race information, and how you can tweak your prompts to improve their output.

Example: Race Description

First, we tested out a simple prompt: refresh the race description/history for the Scott Coffee Run. The initial text was:

The Scott Coffee Moorestown Rotary 8K is named for one of the founders of the race, Scott Coffee, who passed away in the summer of 2006. Proceeds benefit the activities of Moorestown Rotary Charities and the Scott Coffee Education Endowment for scholarships.

The race is presented by the Moorestown Rotary Club in cooperation with the Township of Moorestown, and the Moorestown Community House. 8K – flat and fast – starting and finishing at the Community House on Main Street. The traffic-free USATF certified course passes through the historic, tree-lined streets of 300 year old Moorestown. There are splits every mile and two water stops.

Google Gemini Output:

The Scott Coffee Moorestown Rotary 8K honors the memory of Scott Coffee, a key figure in the race’s founding, who passed away in summer 2006. The race supports scholarships through the Scott Coffee Education Endowment and the charitable endeavors of the Moorestown Rotary Charities.

Organized by the Moorestown Rotary Club alongside the Township of Moorestown and the Moorestown Community House, the race offers a fast and flat 8K course. Starting and finishing at the Community House on Main Street, the USATF-certified route winds through the historic, tree-lined streets of Moorestown, a town steeped in 300 years of history. Runners benefit from mile splits and two water stops along the way.

ChatGPT Output

The Scott Coffee Moorestown Rotary 8K holds a significant place in the community, honoring the memory of one of its founders while also supporting important causes. It’s wonderful to see how it brings together various entities like the Moorestown Rotary Club, the Township of Moorestown, and the Moorestown Community House for a common purpose.

The flat and fast course sounds ideal for both seasoned runners and those looking to challenge themselves, and the scenic route through Moorestown’s historic streets adds a special touch to the event. With mile splits and water stops along the way, participants can stay on track and hydrated throughout the race. It’s events like these that not only promote physical activity but also foster community spirit and contribute to charitable endeavors.

Review Output and Rephrase Prompts

This demonstrates why it’s important to always read and review the output from AI. Google Gemini version is similar to the original, and keeps all the key details (who it’s named for, what cause it supports, and important course information). On the other hand, the ChatGPT version includes a lot of descriptive language that you might like, but leaves out the actual charity it supports, who it’s named for, and important information like the USATF certification and frequency of water stops.

This doesn’t necessarily mean the Google Gemini is the better option for AI assistance, though. Sometimes, you just to better phrase your prompt to get the type of content you want. By asking ChatGPT a more specific “Re-write this description including all important details”, the output was much more usable for a website. This time, it included all key details, while adding more context about the potential value of the event.

The Scott Coffee Moorestown Rotary 8K, named in honor of co-founder Scott Coffee, who passed away in 2006, serves as a vital fundraiser for the Moorestown Rotary Charities and the Scott Coffee Education Endowment for scholarships. Organized by the Moorestown Rotary Club in collaboration with the Township of Moorestown and the Moorestown Community House, this event features a flat and fast 8K course that starts and ends at the Community House on Main Street.

The USATF certified course offers a traffic-free experience, guiding runners through the picturesque, tree-lined streets of Moorestown, which boast a rich history spanning 300 years. Mile splits and two water stops are strategically placed along the route, ensuring participants can monitor their progress and stay hydrated throughout the race.

By bringing together local organizations and the broader community, the Scott Coffee Moorestown Rotary 8K not only promotes physical fitness but also honors the legacy of Scott Coffee while supporting charitable initiatives and educational opportunities for deserving individuals.

Now, you have two accurate versions of a race description, one from Google Gemini and one from ChatGPT. Pick the one you like best, or mix and match to update your website’s personality.

Other Content Types AI Can Help With

The race description is an obvious and easy example of content that can be quickly and easily refreshed with AI. But there are other types of website content that could benefit from an AI recharge. These include:

  • Shirt/medal description. Many racers run for the swag (and the bling). Re-up the description of any giveaways and finisher awards to highlight why they’re worth running for.
  • Post-race party. Come for the run, stay for the fun! Changing up your language can help express the atmosphere and amenities runners can expect at your post-race party.
  • Call for sponsors. You need to write the actual perks for sponsoring companies, but AI can help you pitch the oppurtunities more appealingly.
  • Referral programs. Offering some great rewards for participants who refer friends? Let AI help you really sell the benefits of referring!

Summary

While we don’t recommend AI to write your entire website, it’s a great tool to you level up your content. Just make sure you keep the human element, too, and always review any AI output for accuracy before using it.

If you’re upgrading your website to V2, we recommend keeping 3 tabs open on your computer:

  • 1 tab with your legacy website, so you can easily copy all text content (and download images to upload)
  • 1 tab with the AI tool of your choice to test out a new spin on your old content
  • 1 tab with your Website V2 Website Builder to paste your text into your soon-to-be new website, whether you choose your original version or the AI suggestion.
