RaceJoy recently introduced predictive map positioning, giving timers a powerful new way to deliver a “big marathon” style experience. With this feature, spectators can now see every participant on the course—even those not carrying phones—by combining chip timing data streamed from RaceDay Scoring with RaceJoy’s mapping tools. This new predictive tracking builds on the recent advancement of RaceJoy’s chip-based tracking alerts.
To see a step-by-step walkthrough of setup and configuration, watch the full RaceJoy Predictive Mapping Webinar. Below are highlights of what timers need to know.
What’s new
- Predictive/Estimated Positioning: Expands tracking beyond GPS phone users to include all participants.
- Mixed Data Indicators:
- Pulsing marker = GPS-tracked participant
- Solid marker = Timing-data tracked participant
- Backend Monitoring Upgrades: View first and last participants at each split, identify off-course issues, and verify read counts quickly.

How it works
- RaceDay Scoring streams timing data directly into RaceJoy.
- Adaptive Pace Algorithm blends official start times, estimated paces, chip reads, and graded pace tables to calculate location.
- Push Notifications: In-app alerts show official split data and estimated finish times.
Requirements to enable predictive tracking
- RaceJoy-Certified Timer status and request enablement via support. Timers must request the activation and have a demonstrated history with RaceJoy to secure approval (email support to request using predictive tracking at upcoming event at racejoy@runsignup.com).
- Proven real-time streaming from RaceDay Scoring (actual start and ongoing reads).
- Sufficient timing equipment for accuracy:
- Half Marathon: 2+ intermediate points
- Marathon: 3+ intermediate points (more is better)
- Individual participant estimated finish time collected during registration with added custom question or updated in RaceJoy

Setup highlights
- Build course and timing points in RaceJoy (map mats accurately).
- Create segments and map occurrences in RaceDay Scoring.
- Stream live on race day; RaceJoy will display start times and read counts.
- Replay reads if needed to backfill splits (missed notifications cannot be resent).

Operational Musts
- Use chip starts, not just gun starts.
- Be live at the gun to capture first reads immediately.
- Ensure mats and course maps align correctly.
- Verify timing equipment timestamps and time zones.
- Enable RaceJoy a week before race day so participants can update paces and spectators can subscribe.

Quick Setup Checklist for Timers
- Add an estimated finish time field to the registration form.
- Place a sufficient number of intermediate mats and test real-time streaming.
- Configure segments and map them in RaceDay Scoring.
- Enable RaceJoy one week before race day and encourage participants to update paces.
