Automated emails are a powerful built-in tool with RunSignup, but many race directors may not be utilizing them to their full potential. Whether you’re new to the platform or a seasoned user, there are several customization features that can make your automated emails more engaging and effective. From personalizing content to targeting specific participants, here are three things you may not know about maximizing automated emails for your events.
Enabling Automatic Emails
It is important to note to edit these automated emails, you must first ensure that they are enabled. Head to your race dashboard, navigate to Email Marketing V2 >> Automated Email, and select the automated email type you want to enable (Incomplete Registration, Price Increase, Registration Followup). Click the Edit button, to find the toggle to enable automatic emails. After enabling, be sure to click the Save Settings. Once this setting is saved, click the Edit button again and click Save Automated Email. Once saved, the automatic emails are now ready for you to customize.

1. Personalization Goes Beyond Names
Automated emails come with a set template, but they’re fully customizable! Most race directors forget that they can edit not just the content but also personalize subject lines and body text to fit their event’s personality. Adding a personal touch, like referencing a participant’s past performance or the event’s mission, can make a big difference. This also includes using custom data tags to pull in more specific information, such as registration data or referral incentives, creating a more engaging experience.

2. Targeted Messages for Specific Events
You don’t have to send generic emails to all participants. RunSignup allows you to segment your email lists by event type — like your 5K vs. 1 mile fun run — so that each group gets relevant information. For example, you can set up targeted drip campaigns for different event types, making your communication more efficient and relevant. This segmentation can help reduce unsubscribes and increase engagement from your participants by tailoring messages specifically to their event category.

3. Automated Emails Aren’t Just for Registrations
While most people think of automated emails for things like incomplete registrations, there’s so much more you can do. Price increase notifications, sponsor messages, and fundraising reminders can all be automated to remind participants and boost engagement. For example, automated follow-up emails can encourage participants to fundraise more by reminding them of their progress or offer incentives for referrals.

Take full advantage of these features to boost engagement, build excitement, and create a seamless experience for your participants. Not sure where to start? Head to the Email Marketing V2 section of your dashboard and start customizing!
