RaceDay Bibs

Clean data is the key to accurate results, and that all starts with bib management. While race directors sometimes manage bib assignment, it’s important for the timer to be aware of/involved in the process to ensure correct results. There are a few way to assign your bibs:

Pre-Assigned

Bibs are assigned to participants before packet-pickup, either manually assigned or auto-assigned.

Auto-Assigned

Bibs are automatically assigned during online registration (pre-assigned) by putting in your bib range.

Dynamically Assigned

Bibs are assigned on a first-come, first-serve basis during packet pick-up, simplifying logistics and reducing pre-event preparation.

Options for Bib Assignment

Import Bibs from a CSV

  • Download your participant data and sort your participants in the CVS
  • Assign bibs in the CSV based on the order you want
  • Upload your CSV, including Reg ID and Bib number, to RunSignup

Manually Assign Bibs in RunSignup

  • Assign individually with RunSignup
  • Usually only for very small races or individual corrections

Assign Bibs in RunSignup after Registration

  • Assign bibs to registered participants based on your criteria
  • Can be assigned alphabetically, by age, by registration date, or a combination of gender and alphabetization

Auto-Assign Bibs at Time of Registration

  • Assigns bibs based on date of registration, based on bib ranges entered
  • Can also assign bibs for previously registered

Assign Bibs Dynamically with the RaceDay CheckIn App

  • Assign bibs as participants arrive via manual entry or QR Code/Barcode Scan on the bib
  • Prevents waste by not assigning bibs that aren’t picked up
  • Allows packet pickup at multiple locations simultaneously, with less pre-event prep

How RunSignup Eases the Bib Management Process

Bib Validation

Bib Validation allows you to prevent duplicate or incorrect bibs by allowing specific bib ranges for each distance. Additionally, it can prevent duplicate bibs and bibs of the wrong length – for example, mistyping 1001 as 100.

Bib Labels

Bib Labels let you easily generate and print labels for any pre-assigned bibs, including the fields your race requires.

CheckIn App

The RaceDay CheckIn App enables you to dynamically assign bibs on-site and still provide participants with a label. This connects your app to a printer designed to print quickly at packet-pickup.

Group/Team Bibs

Group/Team Bibs allow you to set group bib numbers in addition to the per-registrant bib number to track groups by group bib number.

Tips for Bib Numbers when Using RaceDay Photos

If your race offers free photos via the RaceDay Photo Platform, there are a few additional considerations for assigning bibs. Best practices for assigning bibs for more accurate photo tagging include:

  • Use bib numbers of at least 4 digits and remove invalid bib numbers for shorter numbers (to prevent reading and tagging a number on a partially visible bib, such as reading just 27 on bib 1027)
  • Don’t assign (and remove tags for) bibs that may be frequently seen, such as the year of the event or the road number on race course signage.

Names, But No DOB or Gender – What Can a Timer Do?

Timers encounter all sorts of issues that come from all angles – whether it be user error, technology not working correctly, or inclement weather. Hang around some timers, and you will be sure to hear some interesting stories of how they got themselves out of a jam.

One such story comes from Jason Chance, owner of TCR Event Management/Revolution3. Jason recently shared his personal experience dealing with a race registration scenario where essential details were missing; the participants’ dates of birth (DOB) and gender. These details are required to provide official scored results, particularly for age-group and gender-specific awards.
